The cryptocurrency industry is a content creative industry to a considerable extent. Countless heroes all hope to use various creativity to absorb attention, complete the token TGE, and replace the big pie and U in your hand with my brand new token. Chaoshan Xiaoma Ge felt ashamed of himself after seeing it.

On April 15, Optimum completed a $11 million seed round of financing led by 1kx and participated by well-known VCs such as Robot, CMT Digital and Spartan.

In addition to the amount, Optimum is an increasingly rare blockchain infrastructure track. After Move is a public chain, the market no longer pays for the high-performance L1 concept. Sonic (Fantom) and Berachain, who are reincarnated in the filthy land, are more like savior stocks surrounding "complex" token economics.

Public chains have become a foregone conclusion, and what is even more difficult is that most public chains and L2 are customized products in the cloud. If CEX is a major AWS customer, then the decentralized public chains may be on the same server.

Optimum has a commendable courage, but do you really need a decentralized high-TPS product now?

Another form of Celestia

Optimum follows Celestia intercepting Ethereum L2, giving another possibility to virtualize storage and index layers.

Optimum comes with a halo, not given by 1kx or other VCs. Its founder Muriel Médard is a MIT professor and one of the inventors of the Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) technology. She has more than 20 years of research experience in distributed systems and basic computer theories.

In other words, Optimum has a starting point for cryptocurrency circles second only to the Turing Award winners in 2017, and RLNC successfully leveraged tens of millions of dollars. Let’s briefly introduce it.

RLNC was born in 2003 and focuses onWithout changing the existing underlying protocols, more secure and efficient data transmissionMore specifically, the transmission of network information is an inefficient process of continuous replication and quality supplementation. When the network conditions of both or multiple parties are not determined, the Internet tends to transmit the same information multiple times to reduce the "packet loss rate".

Specifically, there are only two ways to transmit network information. The first is to have large quantities and control fullness. It will be transmitted many times. Sooner or later, and the information can be sent over. Try more often will be beneficial. The second is to wait for the receiver's clear reply to extend the time to reduce data volume loss.

Either use time to exchange space or space to exchange time.

RLNC said that both must have, saving time and space, and the construction of a new era of on-chain information transmission is faster, better and easier.

The idea of RLNC focuses on reducing the loss of information transmission. By cutting the data, multiple data blocks or packets are formed, and then the data packets are encoded continuously, such as a string of information being divided into 1,2,3,4,5,6 data blocks.

Each attempt is made to encode 1,2, and add different random constant terms to form

  • Packet 1 = Random Number 1 X Block 1 + Random Number 2 X Block 2

  • Packet 1 = Random number 100 X Data block 1 + Random number 200 X Data block 2

The data blocks can be mixed and configured to form multiple unary quadratic equations. In this way, any two receptions are enough to inversely solve the original data packet, and more data blocks can be configured multiple times.

Compared with traditional information transmission methods, RLNC can reduce the difficulty of information transmission to a constant level, greatly reducing transmission power consumption, so it is widely used in cloud computing, IoT and P2P scenarios.

So, what does this have to do with blockchain?

In Muriel Médard's view, blockchain is essentially a distributed system with multiple repeated backups, extremely difficult and time-consuming indexing.

Because any bill information requires all nodes to record, there are two ways to improve efficiency:

1. The first is to improve the throughput capability of nodes, that is, Optimum P2P product, and use RLNC to help each node improve its operating efficiency;

2. The second is to build a temporary index layer for existing systems such as Ethereum, temporarily store common information and time-sensitive information, and use the computer's RAM concept to launch DeRAM products.

So, what does this have to do with Celestia?

Recalling the love, hate and hatred between Celestia and Vitalik, Vitalik believes that only L2 that uses the Ethereum mainnet or EigenLayer as the DA layer can be called Rollup.

Ethereum provides security for L2/Rollup. L2/Rollup pays for Ethereum's blob space, with fair prices and reasonable standards. Celestia's strategy is "I have cheaper DA layers for sale here". Although everyone knows that Ethereum is not safe, it is better to have a lot of money. Regarding the concepts of Celestia and DA layer, you can refer to the ones you wrote before. The war between Ethereum Rollups (STARKNET) ends, new narrative DA is ready to be released

The same is true for Optimum's idea. Through RLNC technology, it can provide cheaper access and mathematical mechanisms can ensure its security.

Ethereum lacks core and soul

From a technical perspective, Optimum can indeed reduce node latency to enhance node profitability. However, in reality, Ethereum's centralization has basically become a foregone conclusion, and the reason is no different and the efficiency is higher.

In terms of specific implementation, Optimum P2P has been promoted in advance, while DeRAM is still under development. In Optimum's view, blockchain is a typical "chip-free and soulless" semi-remembered state.

From the perspective of modern computer system architecture, it has input and output, CPU, operating system, and storage functions, forming the von Neumann architecture.

Optimum believes that the current blockchain has no memory, so it can only use the operating system to directly call the data of the hard disk (node). The key is still a 3.5-inch floppy disk, so the RAM (memory) function needs to be added (RAM is not equivalent to the concept of memory, so it has been simplified here).

Of course, EVM or Ethereum, as the core of the entire public chain system, is a difficult problem to completely solve. Just like the DOS system cannot drive 4090, Optimum can theoretically be integrated with any L1/L2, that is, Scale Any Chain.

In fact, if there is no need to increase the entity, the expansion and acceleration of public chains have reached the critical value. Most public chains and L2 architectures are indisputable facts in cloud services. Judging from the incentive nodes joining the Optimum network, this is more like a new project competing for the trust of big players, first pushing up TVL, and then shipping it to retail investors at the right time.

Conclusion

After seeing Optimum get financing, his first reaction is the rebirth of VC coins?

Image description: April financing data

Judging from the financing data of Decentralised.co, the half-month financing in April has almost caught up with the entire amount in March, especially the two moves a16z CSX, investing in Ambient and Glider respectively, giving a hint of certainty in the unstable world caused by Trump.

Optimum also officially joined the melee. Although I am not optimistic about its integration prospects with Ethereum, it is still worth our attention in terms of expected tokens and technology exploration. As I said, Sonic and Berachain actually have nothing to do with technological progress.

Some new ideas are always good. Think about what other elements in Ethereum can be disassembled and tokenized, so that you can think about it.
