Spar supermarket, an international grocery chain, has introduced Bitcoin payment options in Switzerland, becoming the latest to adopt the innovation.

Bitcoin payment options are gradually becoming the norm for businesses globally. Recently, a prominent international grocery chain introduced the payment option to one of its stores in the pro-Bitcoin nation of Switzerland.

Notably, DFX.swiss, a crypto off-ramp startup based in Switzerland, disclosed the recent addition in a Thursday LinkedIn post. It revealed that a Spar supermarket, specifically based in Zug, has appeared on the BTC Map.

For context, the BTC Map is a community-driven platform that highlights locations globally where users can pay in Bitcoin. DFX.swiss noted that Spar supermarket recently went live, becoming one of the first stores in Zug to adopt payments in the pioneering cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin Payment Becoming the Norm

Rahim Taghizadegan, an economist and director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland, toured the Spar supermarket, confirming the efficiency of the payment option. He showed in a LinkedIn video simulation that the innovation was as simple as scanning a QR code to remit Bitcoin to the store.

Notably, the payment option taps the Bitcoin Lightning Network’s peer-to-peer technology to simplify the payment process. DFX.swiss disclosed that it enabled the remittance through the new OpenCryptoPay protocol, offering in-person solutions for everyday crypto payments.

Meanwhile, the Zug Spar supermarket could further spur a mainstream adoption of Bitcoin payments globally. The grocery chain has over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, with an average of 14.7 million shoppers daily. As a result, expanding the payment across its chains would be a massive step in the broader use of Bitcoin and crypto payments.

Remarkably, the payment option’s first stop in Switzerland highlights the European nation’s friendlier stance towards cryptocurrency. Aside from the prospect of a strategic Bitcoin reserve gaining momentum in Switzerland, about 1,031 outlets accept Bitcoin payments, per BTCMap, ranking it as one of the largest in the region.

Recall that the Swiss City of Lugano, which adopted the asset and USDT as legal tender in 2022, recently unveiled a statue honoring Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto.

Bitcoin’s Global Adoption as a Means of Payment

Bitcoin’s adoption as a means of payment extends beyond Switzerland, gradually earning merchants’ trust as a seamless payment method. For instance, the top South African grocery store, Pick n Pay, announced in 2022 that it accepts Bitcoin payments.

Furthermore, luxury brands like Ferrari and SFL Maven also accept Bitcoin payment. Interestingly, the means of settlement also recently entered the UK’s education system. For context, Lomond School announced last week that it will start receiving tuition fees in BTC starting in autumn 2025.

With Bitcoin’s giant strides and growing institutional and national adoption, more outlets are likely to add payment options for the premier asset and cryptocurrencies in general.
