Elon Musk’s company, xAI, announced on Wednesday a “memory” feature upgrade for Grok. The new feature will enable the bot to remember details from past conversations with a user.

The company argued that the new feature is designed to give Grok a competitive edge against top chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The chatbot’s rival, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has had a similar memory feature, which was recently upgraded to reference a user’s entire chat history. Google’s chatbot also has persistent memory to tailor its replies to individual people.

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has leveled its Grok chatbot with top rivals like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini at least, in terms of a “memory” feature. The chatbot can now remember details from past conversations with a user.

The company noted that Grok will provide more personalized responses if asked for recommendations by a user if they’ve used it enough to allow it to “learn” their preferences.

“Grok now remembers your conversations. When you ask for recommendations or advice, you’ll get personalized responses.”

Grok.

The chatbot also argued that memories are transparent, and “you can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”

The company mentioned that the new memory feature is available in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps. The firm also acknowledged that Grok’s new memory feature will not be available for users in the European Union or the United Kingdom.

The EU noted its AI Act has strict risk-based rules requiring high-risk AI systems to undergo assessments before market entry, emphasizing transparency requirements for AI-generated content. According to the bloc’s regulation, the first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence specifically addresses AI personalization and data retention concerns, which create higher compliance barriers for features that store user data across sessions.

xAI maintained that the chatbot’s memory feature can be deactivated from the Data Control page in the settings menu. The company also added that individual “memories” can be deleted by tapping the icon beneath the memory from the Grok interface on the web, but the feature for Android will come at a later date. The firm stated that it’s working on bringing the memory feature to the Grok experience on X.

xAI launches Grok Studio with split-screen collaboration

Elon Musk’s xAI released Grok Studio on April 16, which offers users a canvas-style interface for building apps, writing documents, and developing browser games. The chatbot’s upgrade levels it with its rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT Canvas and Anthropic’s Claude Artifacts in the competitive AI space.

The firm noted that Grok Studio will have split-screen capabilities for real-time collaborations between users and the AI, which will enable simultaneous work on various creative projects. Grok said in a tweet that “Grok Studio will open your content in a separate window, allowing both you and Grok to collaborate on content together.”

xAI also acknowledged that the interface supports multiple programming languages, such as Python, JavaScript, and C++, with the additional ability to preview HTML snippets.

xAI also launched Grok 3 in February, adding to the firm’s rapid expansion of AI capabilities since last year. The firm noted that Grok Studio will be available to both free and paid users.

Musk’s company also revealed a Google Drive integration feature, which lets users add documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks directly into prompts. The feature first appeared in Google’s Gemini, with OpenAI following Suid and Anthropic adopting it later on.
